The Salutation Tavern, Greenwich 1756

(caricature) The received basis for dating the view as 1756 and the drawing as 1827 (the year of Rowlandson's death) are not clear from inspection of the item itself, nor is the very slight waterfront topography on the left beyond the inn identifiably Greenwich. The view, of which the watercolour wash elements are strongest in the foreground, shows fishwives and oysterwomen landing the catch from boats at the inn's river steps, with other boats beyond along the indeterminate waterfront.
