A castle with a Dutch ship sailing nearby

A portrait of a Dutch ship shown in port-broadside view. The ship is shown moving through a channel, towing a boat, with a rocky landscape on the left and right. The deck is full of figures all facing the bow of the ship. It is flying the Dutch flag from the mainmast and a red flag with a device in gold at the stern. The ship's portrait is minutely observed. The high rocks topped by a castle are not intended to be topographically correct but are a motif used in Flemish landscape art which Vroom adopted into his marine work.
