Proposal for a chain shackle attachment

Proposal for a chain shackle attachment

George Atkins

305 x 188 mm

Scale: 1:12. Plan showing a section through an Orlop Deck beam end with a proposal for passing a chain and shackle round the beam for attaching the Hempen cable, instead of the common clench.

Signed by Richard Blake [Master Shipwright, Portsmouth Dockyard, 1835-1844].

A clench is where a bolt or shackle has its bolt hammered over so it cannot be removed, thus closing the shackle permanently.
