The Indiaman 'Euphrates'

The 617 ton vessel was constructed in Liverpool in 1834, and was originally owned by Jamieson and Company of the same city. Its first voyage was to Calcutta in 1836-1837. It made several journeys to China and in 1853 sailed to Australia. In 1864-1865, the 'Euphrates' was sold to G. Bremner and was registered in London. Returning from West Africa in 1868, with a cargo of palm oil and nuts, the vessel capsized. At the time it was some 15 miles south-west of Holyhead where it eventually drifted ashore; all aboard were drowned. The painting has been signed by the artist and dated 1835.
