The' James Baines' Journal of Alfred Withers

The 'James Baines' was one of the few clippers fitted as an emigrant ship. It sailed on 5 January 1857 from Liverpool and arrived at Melbourne on 23 March. Withers sails as a passenger on his honeymoon. He describes the confusion and crowding on the wharf with the emigrants anxious to secure their berths and he buys food for the outset of the voyage: 'I very judiciously selected park pies, a thing above all others which I afterwards learned would cause sickness'.
