The prospect of the Royal Hospital at Greenwich to the Thames

Published as plates 3-4 in volume III of Campbell's 'Vitruvius Britannicus' between 1715 and 1725. Unlike the other London plates in Campbell's architectural compendium, this is a bird's eye view within a border line; it seems to be a prospect of the Hospital as then envisaged after various design changes, though not exactly as finished in 1751. The Queen Mary Court, upper left, was not started until 1735 and the step arrangements to the two dome vestibules are not as built. Only the 'turret' on the King Charles Court (lower right) was built but soon taken down and there were no connecting links across the courtyard of that building or the Queen Anne Court (left) after a temporary chapel there, in that position, was removed when that in Queen Mary's Court was finished.
