Oval cornelian intaglio seal
Oval cornelian intaglio seal set in a silver mount. The silver mount is decorated with flowers and leaves, and has a baluster-shaped agate handle. The intaglio is cut with the coat of arms and the crest of Admiral Sir Robert Calder (1745-1815) and is inscribed with his Latin motto 'VIGILANS NON CADET'. The intaglio is said to have been given to Admiral Sir Robert Calder by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) on the occasion of Sir Robert being made a Baronet in 1798. There is an associated wax impression in a box.
