The model has been made entirely of wood with the individual plates, frames, decks, and other structural elements individually applied to a a rectangular bevelled baseboard. Both the model and baseboard have been stained a uniform dark brown colour, and the overall effect is of a two dimensional ship plan. A paper label has been applied to the bottom left hand corner of the upper surface of the baseboard that reads \"No.8 Sectional models shewing method proposed for armour plating a gunboat 1861 RNM p.31.\".
