Anchor winch model; Capstan model

Scale: Unknown. A working model of a combined anchor winch and capstan, circa 1900. The model is made almost entirely in brass, parts of which are painted black and mounted on a plain rectangular mahogany baseboard. Two stylised hawse holes, side by side, are drilled through the baseboard, surmounted by a lozenge-shaped mahogany block, which is rounded off at its edges and hole openings. Next to the hawse holes are a pair of cable holders made from turned brass and mounted on a black-painted metal lozenge-shaped plinth. The winches have flat brass circular tops and the bodies are of black-painted metal cast in the shape of a six-pointed star on circular beds, the circumference of which are polished brass. The cable holders can be turned. The capstan sits between the cable holders, and to one side, and is a conventional shape and mounted on a brass bed atop a black-painted plinth. The capstan is brass, the waist of which is highlighted in black. Either side of the capstan are two levers with handles. To the other side of the hawse holes, at the short end of the baseboard, is a cylindrical brass bar that wraps around the baseboard and screwed to the underside of it. The model shows that, by using a system of gears and clutches, the cable holders can be disengaged from the capstan when the anchor is let go and its speed controlled by a friction brake.
