Berck Plage with Bathers, No. 53
In the catalogue that accompanied Wyllie's 1892 exhibition at the Fine Art Society, 'Holiday Drawings in France and Italy', Mrs Wyllie described the scene shown in this watercolour of bathers on the beach at Berck-sur-Mer: 'M.M. les baigneurs in stripes of blue and white or chocolate and yellow arrive. The fashion is to undress in one's room, throw a large cloak or Turkish towel over one's bathing dress, run down the sand and into the sea.' The watercolour is signed in the lower right hand corner.
William Lionel Wyllie
