Butterfield dial
Butterfield dial for latitudes 40-55 north. A single hour scale is depicted on a scroll, numbered IIII-XII, I-VIII. There is decoration around the compass and the gnomon hinge, and a centrally placed oval engraved with a foliate design. On the compass is an eight-point compass rose with the cardinal and quadrantal points named in French; the intermediate points being marked by single lines. The degree scale is depicted on a scroll clockwise around the north point, divided 30-0-30. An engraved arrowhead points to magnetic north at 8 west of north. The latitude scale on the gnomon is adjustable for latitudes 40-55 and is decorated with foliate engraving. The compass base is engraved with acanthus leaves at the centre. The remainder of the compass and the reverse side of the dial-plate is filled with a table of latitudes of European cities and towns, and also Quebec which was a French colony until 1759. Despite the adjustable gnomon, this dial has only one degree scale (for which the latitude is not specified, but is measured as 49). The signature, 'Haye AParis', is flamboyant and the decoration includes other foliate designs as well as the more normal acanthus.Thomas Haye
