Downes patent scupper (1837)
Scale: Unknown. Sectional design model depicting the Downes patent scupper (1837) and the type of scupper used on warships prior to this design. The two scuppers are cut through a wooden board, supported on four metal feet. The smaller one is made of lead pinned to the wooden board and cut so that the sides of the hole which the lead covers has been dressed. There are remains of red paint or a red seal on the surface of the scupper. The larger scupper has lead lining held in place by an iron orsteel ring, fixed to the board with four screws. The ring has is inscribed "Commander Henry Downes RN Inventor". The wooden board shows traces of stain. A paper label has been applied to the board between the two scuppers, which is discoloured and illegible. There is also a small white paper label with a printed blue boarder marked with an illegible number written in pencil.
