Dutch men-of-war in harbour
Two Dutch men-of-war are the principal subjects of this painting of a harbour entrance. The ship in the foreground, to the right of the picture, lies at anchor in stern and port-side view, with small craft delivering supplies. The insignia of the ship, a figure mounted on horseback, is visible carved on the stern. There is an emphasis on the calm of the harbour and activity associated with it. A small boat in the foreground, to the left, is full of people and a man in the prow holds a boathook, indicating that it is preparing to go alongside the man-of-war. The artist has placed his signature on the stern of the ship, 'I Browne Fc'.
