Equipment model; Sectional model

Scale unknown. Model of an iron cathead for iron cased ships proposed by Mr J.E. Binstead (circa 1861). The model has been made in wood and realistically painted, and is secured to a baseboard at the same angle as it would be placed on an actual vessel. The cathead and its mounting and the inboard hull have been painted black and the exterior hull has been painted red. The hull has been depicted cut away at the top. There is a varnished, unpainted, wooden insert between the two frame supports. The construction of the cathead has been strengthened using a lattice-like arrangement of iron plates. The baseboard is almost square in shape and is made of unpainted wood. The underside of the baseboard is inscribed 'J.E. Binsted March 8th/61 Chatham' and the upperside is inscribed '1339/ 61'. The exterior hull is inscribed 'By J.E.B' and '1339/61'.
