Figurehead of HMS 'London'

HMS 'London' was a 92-gun warship launched at Chatham in 1840. During the Crimean War she was badly damaged while participating in the bombardement of Sebastopol, the crew suffering many casualties. After the war the 'London' was repaired and converted into a screw vessel. She was the harbour guard-ship at Zanzibar between 1874 and 1881 when she was involved in suppressing the East African slave trade. The ship was broken up in 1884. The figurehead depicts a woman wearing the White Tower of the Tower of London as a crown.
