Frontispiece of 'The Mariner's Mirror' (1588) written by Lucas Jansz Waghenaer (1533-1606)
A Dutch master pilot, Lucas Jansz Waghenaer, published Spiegel der Zeevaerdt in 1584. This influential first sea-atlas comprised charts, sailing directions, coastal views and navigational tables of the European coasts from Gibraltar to North Cape. It was widely translated and after the English editions of 1588, sea-atlases became known as 'waggoners'.
