HMS 'Niobe' (1866)
Scale: 1:24. A midship sectional model of the hull from the gun deck up of HMS 'Niobe' (1866), a 4-gun wooden screw sloop. The model is largely constructed from wood, with the outboard hull painted black. Internally the bulwarks are finished in white with a flesh pink, and with waterways, with the upper portion where the hammocks were stowed finished with a black moulded panel and simulated black hammock nettings. The deck is a single piece of wood, stained and varnished, with individual planks inscribed. Fitted across the model is a wooden bridge walk fitted with brass stantion rails and supported by two large turned brass pillars from the deck up. In the middle of the deck is a engine room telegraph turned in brass and mounted on a square moulded base.
Where the hull has been sectioned, the various components such as planking, frames, etc. have been inked in and grained to show the hull construction. On the underside of the gun deck is an iron deck beam painted white. The whole model is mounted on its original moulded mahogany baseboard, which has been stained and polished, and has a printed paper label applied to it with the number "11" inscribed.
