Jezail
Jezail. The wooden stock is covered with beaten brass and is of the jezail style with a fishtail butt. An ornate trigger is set into stock. The lock is a flintlock. The barrel is made of steel, bound to the stock with beaten brass bands. The calibre is 0.75in. A crocodile or serpent and a bird are scratched on the side of the stock as well as '18 IX'. With no maritime connections, presumably this weapon was brought back from the East by a naval officer. It came to the National Maritime Museum in 1961 from the Victualling Yard at Deptford. A jezail is an Afghan matchlock or flintlock gun with a slender curved butt.
