Mariner's quadrant, circa 1600
Brass quarter of a circle with two sights, and an engraved scale from 0-90 by 1. Every 5 the lines have been extended to the apex of the instrument. The plumb bob is a probably a later replacement. The back of the quadrant is blanc, but for a thinly engraved circle with a diameter of 108 mm.
This is a mariner's or surveyor's quadrant. It is used to determine the elevation of a celestial body above the horizon or the angle of elevation of a building or geographical feature. The sights and plumb bob are intact.
