Model of a dan buoy

Model of a dan buoy made of cork rings of ascending size, on a central wooden pole, the whole painted black. Such buoys could be of various sizes and this one from the studio models of Clarkson Stanfield RA was used as model for a larger lighter-coloured one, half-filling a boat, in at least one of his oil paintings, a Dutch subject of ships at anchor off the mouth of the Schelde (711 x 1105 mm). This was with Ackermann and Johnson , London, Dec. 2004 but was subsequently sold at Christie's, 'British Pictures', sale of 8 June 2006, lot 107 (illustrated). The catalogue gives the date as 1839 but inspection at Peter Johnson's in 2004 suggested 1836 is more likely, though indistinct from earlier cleaning. From Stanfield's studio collection (Bagshawe Collection), acq. 9.04.
