'Seringapatam', port bow

Scale: 1:48. A full hull model built with planks glued and pegged to sawn frames. 'Seringapatam' was named after the 1798 victory by British troops over Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, which finally gave the East India Company control over that south-west Indian state. Designed by Richard Green, the ship was built in 1837 at the Greens' Blackwall yard in London just after the East India Company lost its monopoly of trade with the East in 1834. It was important as the first of the so-called 'Blackwall frigates', less like a man-of-war and with a lighter stern than earlier Indiamen.
