Battle of Cape St Vincent, 1797
One of a series of four monochrome drawings showing some of Nelson's actions. This scene concentrates on the Battle of St Vincent, 14 February 1797. Nelson's ship, the 'Captain', can be seen in the foreground on the left, engaging with the Spanish ships 'Santissima Trinidad' and 'San Josef'. Since both were then, respectively the largest and second-largest ships in the world, the artist intentionally focuses on an incident in which Nelson's 'Captain', with less than half their firepower, engages them.
