HMS 'Warrior' and 'Warspite' at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, about 18.25
Signed by the artist, lower right. On the left in this well-finished and almost panoramic wash drawing is the battleship 'Warspite', in action at the Battle of Jutland, at about 18.25 on 31 May 1916. She is under fire from five German battleships while the badly damaged armoured cruiser 'Warrior', on the right, tries to withdraw to the westward. Wyllie also painted a large oil version of the composition, apparently to commemorate the presence on 'Warspite' at Jutland of Midshipman Herbert Maurice Huntington-Whitely (1896-1975). This was presumably commissioned by his father, Sir Herbert Huntington-Whiteley (1857-1936, 1st baronet) and was probably the picture exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1917 under the title 'Jutland, 31st May 1916: HM Ships "Warspite" and "Warrior"': it remains in family possession. Herbert Maurice was a Commander when he left the Navy on succeeding as second baronet in 1936, but served again as an Acting Captain in the Second World War
