The Dutch fleet before the Battle of Lowestoft, May-June 1665
No.1.
In this drawing, the Dutch fleet is under easy sail before the wind. In the centre of the drawing is a large ship with a flag and pendant at the main. On the right is a shop with a flag at the main and a pendant at the fore. There is a large galjoot in the centre foreground.
The drawing is inscribed in the top left in pencil, in the Elder's hand, 'No 1 1665'. There is a second inscription in brown ink, in the Younger's hand, which reads, '1665 ind maent Juij' (In the month of June, 1665). It is unlikely that the 'No.1' here refers to the series of drawings van de Velde produced showing the Battle of Lowestoft, but it probably means that the drawing is one of a pair done on the same day. This series of drawings is continued by a number of other works.
