View of Greenwich in 1877 showing the training ship 'HMS Warspite'
This small painting by Claude Moore (1853-1901) gives a scene of Victorian Greenwich indicating something of the hectic life on the river in the late 19th century. For centuries the river was the lifeblood of trade into the City of London and ships were constantly passing Greenwich on their way to load or unload goods. Cadets of the Marine Society trained on ships in the river before being sent to sea. In the centre of the composition lies HMS 'Warspite' lit from behind by milky-golden sunlight. The Naval College can be seen to the right with a group of musicians and other figures on the landing in the foreground.
