Emma's Songbook, 'Nelson's Victory'
Emma's Songbook, 'Nelson's Victory'
Emma's songbook, with Haydn Cantata. A collection of patriotic songs, operatic arias and romantic ballads in modern half calf and marbled binding. Nelson's mistress was celebrated in 18th century society for her classical 'Attitudes'. Her singing, however, was not to everyone's taste. Goethe who visited the Hamiltons in Naples in 1787 remarked, 'I must confess that our fair entertainer seems to me, frankly, a dull creature├½Ôûê_even her singing is neither full throated or agreeable', and Lady Hamilton, the wife of the Whig politician, is said to have described it as 'vile discordant screaming'.
