Instructions for the yeomanry and the volunteers
Printed instructions for the yeomanry and volunteers stationed at the west side of Temple Bar, at Nelson's funeral. These instructions, by command of His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, were issued to the volunteer militia who lined the streets between the Admiralty and St Paul's on the day of Nelson's funeral. They relate specifically to those stationed on the west side of Temple Bar - the point at which the Lord Mayor of London, attended by alderman and sheriffs, received the procession. They reflect the solemnity and formality of the occasion, dictating 'muffled drums to roll' and 'music to play solemn dirges occasionally'. The men had to stand two deep and wear 'a crape on the left arm below the elbow' to indicate their responsibilities and also their respect. They were responsible for ensuring that no unauthorized individuals joined the procession: 'The troops are not to suffer any carriage to enter the Grand Route from the Admiralty to St Paul's, except those following the procession.'
