Exterior of the astronomy centre of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich
Now an astronomy centre, construction of the 'New Physical Observatory' began in 1891 and was completed in 1899 with the addition of a central dome. The 30-foot telescope dome was originally built to house the Lassell 2-foot reflecting telescope; this was later replaced by two much large refractors presented to the Royal Observatory in 1896 by Sir Henry Thompson.
