Plan of Toulon
Single sheet. Col. ms. Medium: 2 leaves joined at horizontal centre-line. Scale: [ca. 1:19 000]. Cartographic Note: North at 326 degrees. Ungraduated. Drawn on a squared pencil grid. Soundings. Scale in toises. Contents Note: Fortifications and cultivation shown. Extensive key, including lists of ships in the ports, including those burnt in the Port Neuf. Inscribed 'Plan de la Rade et du Port de Toulon avec la position des postes exterieurs de cette place, occupes par les troupes des Puissances Coalisees en Decembre de l'annee 1793.' The Coalition fleet, under Hood, was invited into Toulon in August 1793 to protect the population against the Jacobins. The map shows the fortifications during the Jacobin siege. Napoleon achieved early fame by capturing fort l'Eguillette (labelled N on the plan), forcing the fleet to withdraw from both anchorages. They left in such haste that they failed to destroy many of the French ships in the Old Port.
