Captain Henry Avery loads treasure chests onto his ship

The notorious buccaneer and pirate Henry Avery (or Every/Avary) takes possession of loot from the captured Arab ship 'Gang-i-Sawai', estimated to be £325,000. Avery's aliases included John Avary, Long Ben, and Benjamin Bridgeman and he is famous for being one of the few major pirate captains to 'retire' (comfortably, one presumes) without being arrested or killed.

Illustration from 'The Pirates Own Book : or Authentic Narratives of the Lives, Exploits and Executions of the Most Celebrated Sea Robbers', by Charles Ellms, published by Thomas, Coperthwaite, 1844, page 24.
