Sir John Hawkins (1532-1595)
Sir John Hawkins was the first English slave trader. He made his first voyage in 1562 when he sailed to Africa with a fleet of three ships and 100 men. He raided the coast and seized 300 Africans whom he sold to Spanish colonists on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. As well as slave trading, Hawkins was a pirate and attacked Spanish ships.
