Lead opening and shadow of bowsprit
Lead opening and shadow of bowsprit
A view of lead opening in the pack ice with the shadow of the bowsprit on the ice. Taken from the bows of the discovery ship Terra Nova (1884) in Ross Sea pack ice on its way to Ross Island. The pack ice stretches to the horizon and has dark patches of open water scattered through it.
The print has a typed caption: 'Lead opening and shadow of bowsprit. Dec. 28th 1910.'
Scott's diary notes that on 28 December 'The sky began to clear in the middle watch [midnight to 4am]; now we have bright, cheerful, warm sunshine...' The ship was then '...amongst floes of decidedly smaller area and the pack has loosened considerably.' [Scott's Last expedition. The Journals, (1984 edition) page 49]
