View of the Barrier at 1.45pm

A distant view from the discovery ship Terra Nova (1884) of the Great Ice Barrier [now called the Ross Ice Shelf] stretching across the horizon. The sea is clear of any ice. Terra Nova reached the Barrier five miles from Cape Crozier soon after 1pm and was estimated to be no more than 60 feet in height.

Ponting recorded in 'The Great White South' (page 55) his regret that due to the delays getting through the floes there was not time to allow him to properly photograph or film the Barrier: 'So, hastily securing such photographs and moving-picture as were possible, with a heavy heart I then impotently watched the bastioned rampart slowly disappear astern...'
