Captain Henry Blackwood (1770-1832)

A half-length portrait to left in captain's (over three years) full-dress uniform of 1795-1812. When commanding the frigate 'Penelope', 36 guns, Blackwood engaged the French ship 'Guillaume Tell', 80 guns, all through the night of 29 March 1800, while she was attempting to escape from Malta. He damaged her so severely that she fell an easy prey next day to Foudroyant, 80 guns. He later commanded frigates at Trafalgar, where he was a witness to Nelson's will before leaving 'Victory'. He later commanded the inshore squadron at the blockade of Toulon in 1810, rose to flag rank in 1814 and was Commander-in Chief in the East Indies 1819-1822. His last service was as C-in-C at the Nore, 1827-1830.
