Portland Bill from the North-East
In this watercolour study, Portland Bill, an isthmus joined to the coast of Dorset, is seen from the Dorset coast east of Weymouth, an area visited by John Constable in the early 19th century. Like many of Wyllie's watercolours it was not intended to be a finished work, but nevertheless demonstrates his skill in handling watercolour to suggest the effect of sunlight on the beach, the sea, and the distant landscape of Portland.
