Seascape from the 'Venedolian'

A sketch from the deck of the 'Venedolian'. It shows the relationship between sea, sky and the ship on the horizon, with the red stack clearly visible. In this sketch Everett demonstrates an interest in the effect of light. Tonal unity is created through the shaft of pink light indicated in the centre of the painting, casting a rose glow over the scene. The calm sea is flecked with pink to show the reflections from the sky and echoes the shading in the clouds. Everett travelled on the 'Venedolian' in January 1908 from Cardiff to Marseilles, Genoa and Gibraltar. He returned to Liverpool in February 1908.
