'Persephone' (1938), on board the former hopper barge W24
Originally named 'W.24' then later 'Persephone'. This photograph was taken 1 February 1943. View looking forward along the starboard side of the upper deck amidships while berthed on the south side of the promontory in No. 3 Basin, Portsmouth Dockyard. She is being fitted with a 48 feet diameter drum to lay Hammel cable pipe under the sea. Her starboard oerlikon gun platform is in the background. This vessel was named Persephone at some time during the conversion and believed to have reverted to W.24 in 1945. She was launched 1 May 1938, taken over by the Royal Navy and converted in early 1943 for Operation Pluto (Pipe Line Under The Ocean) during the invasion of Europe.
