A starboard broadside view of a double-ended sampan at Shanghai being rowed by two women from a standing position with one oar each. The coastline is shown in the distance with many small buildings, a steamer, and local vessels including another double ended sampan and a single masted junk to the right of the image. The original negative envelope stated 'Sampan with 2 women, Shanghai, 1900', while the reverse of one of two contact prints records 'Women in a double ended sampan at Shanghai.'
