A busy river scene with Dutch vessels and a ferry

This painting concentrates on a detailed account of a river scene, creating a peaceful and calm setting. There is a harbour and a port town to the left showing a church and houses interspersed with trees. In the far left foreground a small ferry-boat disembarks passengers and a man on the boat hands a small child up to a maidservant standing on the quay. An affluently dressed couple have just disembarked and they turn back to face the river, which may indicate that they are the child's parents. Another small ferry-boat laden with passengers and four horses have just left the quay from the same point. Several coastal craft with sails are also portrayed on the river.
