A ship is shown on the left, in starboard-broadside view flying the Dutch flag. There are a number of people on board. There is a kaag, or passenger boat, on the right with several passengers and crew. Dolphins can be seen in the central foreground. Careful attention has been paid to the rigging and other detailing. There is other shipping in the far distance and the artist has painted the waves in a lively manner to evoke a choppy day.
