A Dutch ship running on to a rocky coast
A late work by the artist showing a ship flying the Dutch flag and forced towards a rocky coastline in a heavy sea. The coastline beyond rises up as dark and potentially treacherous to the other shipping in the distance. Figures on board the principal vessel are engaged in an urgent attempt to save the ship, with one sailor precariously climbing the rigging to reach the sails. The dramatic effect of the incident is emphasized since this figure is highlighted against the darkness of the menacing sea. This creates a sense of foreboding and menace, heightened by the blackness of the sky.
