A fight in boats
Van de Velde the Younger may have made this rapid drawing in connection with one of his paintings of actions in the Mediterranean between English ships and Barbary pirates (such as BHC0893). A man carrying a flag sits across the stern of the sinking boat on the left while men struggle in the water. Some try to board another boat alongside, whose crew, probably Barbary pirates, are trying to push off with their oars.
