A group of Zanzibar ladies who coaled the 'Agamemnon'
An albumen print. Inscribed: ''Agamemnon' returned to Malta Nov. 1889'. HMS 'Agamemnon' was used in a similar role to that previously fulfilled by HMS 'London' (ZBA2617). Her small boats were used for patrolling while she remained at Zanzibar as a depot and supply vessel, as well as a holding station for slaves captured from dhows prior to their release. It is unknown how many, if any, of those set free in Zanzibar found their way home. Domestic slavery was not abolished in Zanzibar until 1911.
Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection.
