A horse transport vessel
Scale: 1:16. A contemporary model of the midship section of a vessel showing arrangements for the transportation of horses. The depicted vessel has two lower decks, a main deck and a rigged lower mainmast crossed with a yard and rigged with shrouds. The hull is fully planked on frames and varnished with the section of gunwale painted black. The planking on the port side of the main deck has been removed and the large hatch in the centre of the main deck section is open to show better the interior of the model. A yard tackle rigged from the lower yard is being used to hoist a horse either into, or from, the hold.
A temporary extension deck attached to the port side hull has been depicted, its surface covered in sand, and on which is shown two horses with their stable boys being exercised. There's a third horse and its stable boy is missing. The extension deck has a harness pole. The starboard side of the lower deck is used for storing bundles of hay while the central area has accommodation for stable boys. The orlop deck is used for storing water barrels and mezzanines on the port and starboard sides accommodate stabling. Ten horses are depicted in the stables on the port side, the starboard side stables are empty.
