A model of a warship (1800), French, frigate, 44-48 gun
Scale: Unknown. A contemporary full hull and rigged model of a 44-48 French frigate (circa 1800). The hull is carved from a single block of wood and painted a chocolate brown below the waterline and the upperworks finished in a black gloss with the gundeck highlighted by white horizontal band made from bone. The gunports are rigged with guns run out in the firing position as well as the carriage guns on the forescastle and quarter decks. At the bow is a carved wooden half-length figurehead painted gold, whilst at the stern are the galleries carved from bone and decorated in the French style. On deck the masts and spars are all made from bone with the platforms and crosstrees constructed in wood and painted black. The whole model is mounted on two v-shaped keel blocks secured to a rectangular wooden block which has been covered with paper and painted a dark green/black colour.
