A model of HMS 'Royal George'
A portrait of a model of the 'Royal George', 100 guns, in starboard view. It has been depicted fixed to a table base featuring classical figure decoration and a label on the long side that reads 'Royal George, 1st Rate, 100 guns, 850 Men'. The painting was part of a commission of twelve perspective paintings, each of a different class of ship, ordered for King George III in 1773 by Lord Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty, as part of his campaign to get the king more actively interested in naval matters. Each was accompanied by a memorandum describing improvements in design that had been introduced since 1745.Joseph Marshall
