A model of 'Ludlow Castle' (1723) warship, forth rate, 40-guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull block model of the 'Ludlow Castle' (1707) a 44 gun, two-decker fourth rate ship of the line. The model is carved from a solid(?) block of wood and painted a dirty white below the waterline, with the main and upper wales, the bulwarks screens and flush decks all finished in black. The planking along the side at the level of the gun decks painted a dirty yellow ochre, and is complete with two rows of gunports let into the hull and painted red. As is typical of this style of model, the decoration at the bow and stern has been omitted. On deck are two metal eyes, from which the model was originally hung for display, but it is now mounted on a pair of crude and modern wooden crutches. The name 'Ludlow Castle' is marked on the starboard broadside together with the number "16" .There is a paper label on which is inscribed "P", "34g" and "Ludlow Castle, 44, 1744, But really a smaller ship. The ship of 1707 0f the same name was smaller still. The model's Dimensions are about those of the Establishment of 1719 for 49-gun ships. It is probable that there was a "rebuilding" between 1707 and 1744 and that this is the ship represented, but this has not been checked".
