A party from His Majesty
This large picture of walruses being shot for food was painted after Webber's return to London from Cook's third voyage (1776-1780), where he was the official expedition artist. The painting was shown at the Royal Academy in 1784. Scenes with such very unusual subject matter point out the significance of Cook's voyages in expanding the range of topics for British art. This picture also emphasizes the intrepid character of the expeditions, as journeys into the unknown and epic contests between man and nature. In fact, in this instance the contest was very one-sided, since the walruses - then a little-known species - were basically harmless.John Webber
