A Royal yacht at Greenwich

A view across the river towards Greenwich including the building designed by John Webb built in 1664 shown in the centre. Several yachts are shown on the water, although the main focal point is the ornately decorated royal yacht in the foreground slightly to the left of centre. This yacht, at anchor, is flying the Royal Standard and is in the midst of firing a salute. Two figures, a man and a woman, are each shown looking through the windows from the stern of the yacht and other people can be seen in the cabin beyond them. Since the Royal Standard flies the flag of Queen Anne it is even conceivable that the couple shown in the painting are Queen Anne and her husband Prince George, Duke of Cumberland. To reinforce such a reading there is a ceremonial barge significantly shown in the centre of the river, and figures in the boat alongside on the left are waving and cheering at the royal yacht. An elegantly dressed couple are shown on the bank walking towards the royal yacht. A peasant turns around from his labours to look in the direction of the couple.
