Adelie penguin track and sledge track crossing
A view along the sea-ice towards one of the islands off Cape Evans, possibly Inaccessible Island. The focal point of the photograph is the man-made track of footprints and sledge runners crossing with the two narrow, shallow tracks meandering into the distance on the right made by Adelie penguins. The main colony was at Cape Royds, which Ponting visited on a number of occasions.
Ponting wrote: 'They wander for miles over the ice at times, seemingly aimlessly. They are also very fond of exploring the land...'
